Why Sudden Black Clouds are Dropping Temperatures Across North India Today; Will This Week Remain Cooler And Mitigate Heatwave?
Rainy season rains are likely to bring rain from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh and to parts of Rajasthan with rain and strong thunderstorms forming across that area, which can also produce damaging wind.
Thunderstorms set up in North India as a result of too much heat and humidity combine with each other because of the heat generated by the land surface being heated up after a long, hot summer.
Thunderstorms are the result of moisture is moving in from the Bay of Bengal after weeks of dry, very hot conditions with no rain and the resulting thunderstorms form from the land has become too hot for this time of year.

What’s Causing These Sudden Black Clouds
1) Heat + Moisture Collision
Collision of hot, dry air with humid air coming into North India from the Bay of Bengal creates large towering thunderstorms (thunderstorms) over North India.
2) Dust Storm + Thunderstorm Combo
In many areas, the dust created by the dust storm and the wind produced by those dust storms frequently combine with conditions produced by thunderstorms, resulting in a dust storm, followed shortly thereafter by a thunderstorm producing very high winds (40 – 60 kph) and hail (or, in some cases, heavy rain) but not heavy rainfall.
3) Western Disturbance Support
Another contributing factor to the thunderstorms in North India is support from a weak western disturbance that is helping to destabilize the atmosphere and accelerate the formation of clouds.
Why Temperatures Drop So Quickly
Temperature loss will occur immediately as follows:
- Clouds would prevent the sun’s heat from radiating to the ground
- The raindrops passing through the air will cool the air by evaporation
- The force of the wind mixes warm air out of the area with cooler air.
This can produce a decrease (from 5 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius) in temperature almost immediately after the rain begins. This is why you feel an immediate relief from the heat.
Will This Keep the Week Cooler?
Short answer: Yes.
Rain and wind will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the week
The temperatures will be slightly below average for the week (during heat waves) cumulatively.
The temperatures will return to average after each occurrence of rain.
These numbers are a result of the temporary decrease of temperatures.
Why This Won’t End the Heatwave Yet
Reasons the heat wave will not end immediately:
- The storm systems will be localized and of short duration
- After the rain stops, the cloud cover will leave
- The humidity will be high and create a higher heat than before.
Only after the arrival of the monsoon in late June will we have sustained cooler temperatures.
Final Words
The black clouds that are accumulating over northern India are a brief interruption in the continuous stream of heat; they are welcome but will not completely change the overall heat over the year (time). As a result, while the week will not be as extreme as it has in the past, this does not mean the weather will be cool by any stretch of the imagination or to any significant degree.
FAQs
1. Why did the temperature drop from yesterday to today?
Because of the rain, the increase in cloud cover, and the wind that is coming from Canada into the United States, replaces hot air with cold air.
2. Is the heatwave over?
No, this is temporary relief.
3. Will it rain every day this week?
Not continuously—rain will be scattered.
4. When will stable cool weather arrive?
With the monsoon in late June.
