•Meteorologists say the term matters because it helps ordinary people understand why record cold and record heat can both be tied to the same warming planet.
Compound Events: Disasters on Top of Disasters
Researchers also talk about compound events, when two or more extremes hit together or in rapid succession, such as drought followed by sudden flooding or a heatwave arriving during a power shortage. These layered disasters are harder to plan for because emergency systems are built to respond to one crisis at a time, not two crises that feed off each other.
