When farmers dig only as far as subsidy money covers, or when the embankment walls aren’t packed properly, the whole structure can crack open after one strong downpour. And even a well-built pond needs upkeep. Most schemes pay to dig the pond, but almost none set aside money to maintain it afterward, so the work simply stops the day construction ends.

  • Set aside a small budget or labour day each year for desilting, even manually.
  • Combine the pond with other rainwater harvesting methods rather than relying on it alone.
  • Find out if government or rural water schemes cover repairs and desilting, not just the original construction.
