Corporate Net Zero Pledges: Which Ones Are Credible?

Approximately 60 percent of the businesses on the Forbes 2000 list have made net zero promises, with nearly 10,000 businesses adopting science-based goals that have been certified by the SBTi. However, verified goals don’t equate to sincere transition plans.

What’s the Watchdog Status?

According to a 2025 report by the NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch, all of the 55 studied businesses lack effective climate strategies. In 2026, there was no progress in changes that had been made by 20 multinational companies.

What’s Wrong with the Pledges?

Most pledges fail because of the lack of intermediate goals, weak commitment on Scope 3 emissions, and mostly because they rely on offsets instead of actions. Net Zero Tracker confirms that pledges themselves aren’t enough to take climate leadership.

How Can One Assess a Pledge?

Pledges need to have short-term absolute emissions cuts, coverage of the whole value chain, financed transition plan, and minimal offsets.
