Turning Ordinary Cable Into a City-Wide Sensor
Here is where it gets interesting. Researchers used a method known as distributed acoustic sensing. They took a retired fibre-optic cable, the same kind used for internet and phone service, and turned it into thousands of tiny vibration sensors strung along its length. A laser sends pulses through the cable, and any disturbance along the way gets picked up. Over two years, the team recorded 458 clean signals as part of this study.

Four unusual zones turned up, spots where waves slowed down, hinting at cracked rock or trapped water. Two of them lined up with places already known to be sinking slowly.
