How Brazil Cut Deforestation: What Actually Worked?

Brazil deforestation in Amazon has reached the lowest rate in 35 years since records began in 1988: 3,335 square kilometers from August 2025 to July 2026. The deforestation rate surged by 60 percent between 2019 and 2022.

What Was the Strategy Adopted?

Due to Brazil deforestation, Brazil has reinstated its Action Plan to prevent and fight deforestation in the Amazon region. It has four components: enforcement, a sustainable economy, protected areas, and financial incentives.

What Was the Method of Implementation?

The greatest success is attributed to re-introducing penalties for illegal deforestation identified by satellites. Due to such high level of Brazil deforestation, Brazil also prohibits illegal deforestation on its territory from taking out loans from banks. Non-fire primary forest loss hit a record low in 2025, per Global Forest Watch.

What are the Outlook and Challenges?

Fire, logging, and drought already account for 40 percent of the Amazon deforestation rate. The re-election of Lula on October 25 means continuation of the policy despite the strong impact of El Niño.
