Story and Tone
The show makes Amanda Knox’s experience after her roommate Meredith Kercher was killed in Perugia, Italy, in 2007 more dramatic. It talks about how she was wrongfully convicted, spent four years in prison, and the long legal fight that ended with her being released in 2015.
It stays mostly true to what happened in real life, including Knox’s forced fake confession and the stressful interrogations, but it dramatizes some parts to make you feel something. Knox has defended her choices in sharing the story, saying that they help to reclaim her story and correct centuries of wrong ideas.
Reception by critics
Grace Van Patten has gotten a lot of praise for how subtle her performance is, especially for how she learned Italian to play Knox and show how her language skills change over the course of the series.
Some reviews said that the show’s style, like its quirky and artistic beginnings, didn’t fit with its serious subject matter, likening it to “Wes Anderson-lite.” However, Van Patten’s acting really stands out.
On Rotten Tomatoes, 73% of reviewers gave the show a positive rating, which means that most people liked it.
The show has started a new discussion in Italy. Some see it as a dramatic look at how the law is broken, while others say it oversimplifies or sensationalizes reality.
