Hot Nights: How Rising Temperatures Are Stealing Sleep

As per a study in 2026 that focused on about 1,300 cities in the globe, individuals lose as many as 56 hours of sleep every year due to highly hot nights. About 10 percent of this loss (approximately five hours) can be attributed to climate change ( hot nights) caused by human beings.

How Does Heat (Hot Nights) Affect Sleep?

Studies involving nearly 48,000 individuals from 68 countries have indicated that people take longer to sleep and wake up earlier during warmer nights. When the temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius, the average sleep duration is reduced by more than 14 minutes.

Who Suffers The Most?

Scientists posit that people living in developing nations, senior people and females are impacted more by sleep deprivation due to heat levels due to hot nights. Those without AC and unable to afford its use suffer most, while even people living in houses with AC have to endure the heat of the night.

How To Cope With The Situation?

Ideal ways of dealing with the problem include having ventilated rooms in addition to using light bedding materials. Experts recommend having feet out of the sheets to keep one’s body cool. The residents living at the top floors are particularly affected, whereas extreme heat poses a great risk to their health.
