The Sixth Mass Extinction- Are We Already in It

The extinctions occurring currently on Earth are happening at a rate significantly beyond the natural limit. This gives rise to fears that we are entering the sixth mass extinction period on Earth. The process of anthropogenic influences on nature is behind the events taking place today.

Can We Say That Sixth Mass Extinction is Already Happening?

Five episodes of mass extinction have been already identified by specialists. Today the estimate of the global extinction rate is to be tens and hundreds of times more than the average level existing over the previous ten million years. It has been evaluated that approximately a million of species are now endangered.

What Causes Extinction?

Habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution, the presence of exotic species, and climate change are the main drivers of biodiversity loss.

Why Do We Care?

Species are responsible for providing food systems, clean water, fertility of the soil, and other crucial processes happening in nature. Their extinction can jeopardize the health of entire ecosystems.

Can We Stop It?

The preservation of habitats, restoration of damaged ecosystems, and reduction of pollution can slow down the rate of biodiversity loss.
