10 Renewable Energy Myths, Debunked: What the Evidence Says About Clean Power

If you ask ten people about renewable energy myths, you’ll probably get ten strong opinions. Much of it is derived from old headlines, not from present facts. Prices are different, the technology is different and the picture today is very different to the one many of us grew up with. So let’s look at ten myths about renewable energy, and see which ones still hold water.

The Renewable Energy Myths of Cost and Jobs

Myth 1: Clean power is too expensive– It used to be. Now, says IRENA, most new renewable projects are cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives, with solar prices down about 90 percent since 2010.

Myth 2: It’s only affordable for rich countries – False. India, Brazil and Kenya all have huge amounts of solar, wind, hydro or geothermal energy at their disposal.

Myth 3: It does not create jobs- About 16 million people worked in the sector in 2023, from factory staff to rooftop installers.

Renewable Energy Myths of Reliability

Myth 4: The sun and wind are unreliable– A single source can dip but grids combine wind energy, solar power, hydro and stored electricity over large areas to keep supply steady.

Myth 5: Batteries are not strong enough for real demand– Energy storage is growing rapidly, and grid batteries are now providing power exactly when homes need it most, such as the evening peak.

Myth 6: We will always need fossil fuel back up– Some back up is needed today. But smarter grids, bigger batteries and flexible demand are closing that gap every year.

Environment Myths

Myth 7: Old solar panels are just junk– Most last 25 to 30 years, and their glass, aluminum and silicon can be recovered. Recycling is gaining momentum as the first large wave of panels reaches retirement.

Myth 8: Wind turbines kill birds– Turbines do kill birds but not anywhere near as many as are killed by window strikes or house cats. Choosing the location can reduce the risk even more.

Myth 9: They pollute more than they save– A typical panel pays back its manufacturing emissions in one to three years, and then keeps working cleanly for decades.

Myth 10: Renewables will never replace fossil fuels – They already generate nearly a third of the world’s electricity and that number increases every year.
