Researchers looked at solar-related government policies alongside bird records gathered by ordinary citizen birdwatchers, collected through a national reporting network, across more than 2,300 counties over nearly ten years. To measure biodiversity properly, they used a well established ecological formula called the Shannon Index, which looks at how many species exist in an area and how evenly they are spread out.
The results were published in the journal Science, and they showed a clear pattern. Counties with stronger solar promotion policies saw bird diversity fall, especially in wealthier, non-desert regions where many birds nest in shrubs and grass. Interestingly, desert areas and poorer counties did not show the same decline.
Why This Is Happening
The panels themselves are not really the problem. Plant life still grows underneath and around solar farms. But it tends to be simple and repetitive, not the layered, varied greenery that many bird species rely on for nesting and food. Scientists called this “inferior greening,” meaning the land looks green again but has lost much of its natural richness.

This is not a reason to slow down renewable energy. Coal and oil cause far worse long term environmental damage. It is, however, a reminder that where and how solar farms are built matters. Countries such as India, Brazil, and several across Europe are expanding solar capacity fast, and they can avoid repeating the same mistakes by choosing sites carefully.

- Favouring rooftop and already developed land over untouched habitats.
- By avoiding sites known to be rich in birds.
- Native mixed vegetation planted under panels rather than uniform grass.
