Wild Birds and Superbugs: How Red-Naped Ibises Are Revealing the Hidden Spread of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

From these samples, scientists identified 60 bacterial isolates across eight different bacterial families. The most common was E. coli, followed by Enterobacter and Klebsiella. Some of the bacteria found, including two never recorded before in this bird species anywhere in the world, likely came from soil and garbage sites where the ibis forages.

Why the resistance findings raise concern

When tested against common antibiotics, the results were mixed but notable:

  • Nearly all isolates stayed sensitive to strong drugs like ciprofloxacin and cefepime
  • About half showed resistance to amoxicillin, a widely used antibiotic
  • 40 percent of tested isolates were resistant to three or more antibiotic classes
  • Some samples showed reduced sensitivity to imipenem, a drug reserved for serious infections

This does not mean the birds are directly infecting people or farm animals. The scientists were clear that their study only shows the birds can carry these bacteria, not that they are spreading them to humans.
