Vanishing Wildlife: Species at Risk From Climate Change, Hunting and Habitat Loss

Wildlife around the world faces growing pressure, and the numbers tell the story. Wildlife at risk, There are currently 48,646 species threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List out of 172,620 species assessed, and the IPBES Global Assessment estimates that around one million species are at risk of extinction across all of Earth’s known biodiversity. What’s especially worrying about this moment is not just the size of the numbers, but the fact that so many different threats are converging on the same species at the same time.

When Many Threats Come Together

Scientists are increasingly preoccupied with what they call compound risk, the idea that species under multiple pressures at once decline far more rapidly than species under just one.

A study published in Science Advances in February 2026 found that wildlife populations facing multiple threats at once, such as habitat loss plus invasive species, climate change and pollution, decline measurably faster than those facing a single pressure, with each added threat compounding the damage rather than simply multiplying it.

Research also shows climate and habitat pressures interacting directly. Oxford research found that combined extreme heat and land-use change could put nearly 8,000 animal species at risk, because animals could survive climate stress alone, but the added loss of natural spaces leaves them with fewer options to escape rising temperatures.

What Threats Matter Most? – wildlife at risk

All threats are not the same. Recent tracking of monitored vertebrate populations suggests that overexploitation and habitat loss remain the two major drivers of decline globally, followed by pollution, climate change, invasive species and disease.

Habitat destruction from deforestation and land clearing, poaching for horns, tusks and skins and the disruption of breeding cycles and food availability from rising temperatures don’t work in isolation; they all reinforce each other.

Edge Species

The crisis has gotten so bad that a couple of animals show it.” The vaquita, the world’s rarest marine mammal, has fewer than 10 individuals left in the Gulf of California, Mexico, and is on the brink of extinction largely due to illegal gillnets set to catch totoaba fish.

There are an estimated 75 Javan rhinos left, all of them in Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon National Park, where floods and poachers with snares are a constant threat. The saola, a rare mammal of the forested mountains of Vietnam and Laos, hasn’t been reliably seen in years and is thought to be slipping toward extinction without most of us ever knowing it was there.

Mountain species closer to South Asia are under similar strain. The Red Goral is a species that lives on cliffs in the temperate mountains of northeastern India, northern Myanmar and China. Due to its small population and decreasing range, the IUCN has designated it as Vulnerable.

Researchers who modelled its habitat found that only a tiny fraction of its total range remains suitable under current climate conditions, leaving the species with very little refuge as conditions continue to shift.

Amphibians and Ocean Life Face Special Strain

Certain groups of animals are proving especially vulnerable to climate-driven decline. Amphibians are the most threatened of major animals, but mammals also face huge threats from climate change and deforestation.

Coral bleaching is widespread, and places an added strain on ocean food chains already impacted by warming and habitat shifts, and marine environments are also under threat.

Why the Trend Is Still Growing

Human activity is adding to the natural pressures on wildlife. Urban sprawl is destroying forests. Invasive species are taking over native wildlife on islands. Illegal trade continues, with demand for animal parts driving the trade despite bans and patrols.

Climate models suggest that under current trends, many species may lose a large part of their livable range in the coming decades, and conservationists are racing to protect remaining habitats and populations.

What is being done?

The magnitude of threat has led to shifts in conservation approaches. Groups today use tools like AI-powered camera traps, satellite tagging and genetic sequencing to track vulnerable populations more precisely and react more quickly to precipitous declines.

Researchers stress that we can no longer rely on single-issue conservation strategies alone, as species are finding themselves under multiple pressures all at once. And while the window to act is still closing for some of the world’s most vulnerable species, broader international cooperation, stronger habitat protections and sustained funding for anti-poaching and monitoring efforts remain central to slowing the losses.
