Is Global Warming Speeding Up? What New Studies Show

Certainly, about the global warming, reports released during June 2026 showed that the human-induced warming of the planet had increased by 1.37 °C during 2025, which translates to an increase of about 0.27°C per decade. In addition, Earth is now absorbing more energy than ever before in recent history.

What Causes It?

Unprecedented levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere became the primary reason for this phenomenon since the level of carbon dioxide is now measured at 425.6 parts for every million parts of air in 2025. The drop in the level of sulphur dioxide pollution leads to more global warming that was compensated by aerosols before this.

Does Natural Variability Play a Role?

Not really. According to the authors, virtually the entire increase in temperature registered during the last decade came as a result of human activity and 2025, which was the hottest year in history, was hardly impacted by natural variability. On the other hand, El Niño still causes small short-term spikes of temperature that effect global warming.

What Is Going to Happen Next?

If the current emissions continue to increase, the temperature will reach 1.5°C in 2030. There are some signs that the growth of carbon dioxide emissions has slowed down but this does not indicate that the situation is on track. Marine heatwaves hit 65 days globally in 2025.
