The Remaining Carbon Budget: How Much CO2 Can the World Still Emit?

The carbon budget is the amount of carbon dioxide that can still be released without exceeding the temperature limit set.Since the estimate was made in 2026, it’s considered that 130 billion tones of CO2 could still be emitted till then.
What Information is Obtained from it?
Carbon budget merely involves carbon dioxide which makes it a primary estimate with 50% chance of avoiding temperature increases.Reducing the emissions is calculated on an annual basis.
What Happens In Case of High Temperature Limits?
The budget for 1.7°C is assumed to be sufficient for the next 12 years while in the case of 2°C it might be enough for about 25 years assuming similar emission rates.
Why is the Budget Reducing While Emissions Are Decreasing?
According to the forecast, CO2 concentration will reach 425.6 ppm in 2025, and we can state that emissions decrease is ongoing but even then the budget expires if emissions keep increasing.
What Changes are Expected?
There is a need to reach net zero emissions, so this means that the production of renewable power must grow together with the conservation of forests including the Amazon.
