NGT Cracks Down on Groundwater Exploitation by Cricket Stadiums with Fresh Directives

NGT brings new guidelines and fines to restrain misuse of ground water by the cricket stadiums and incorporate sustainable water management in the country.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has been very strong in the opposition against the environmental transgressions committed by the sporting infrastructure and has introduced fresh guidelines to curb NGT ground water abuse by the cricket stadiums in India. The tribunal pointed at unrestrained extraction of ground water to sustain turf, sanitation and other non essential activities without relevant authorization. The NGT, emphasizing on sustainable water management, cautioned that the misuse of NGT ground water by the cricket stadiums would affect the local water tables and ecological stability. The government is now to be instructed to measure infractions, repay environmental payment and make sure that groundwater rules are observed to the letter to avoid the further exploitation of the NGT groundwater by the cricket stadiums.

NGT Orders Environmental Compensation and Compliance Measures

In its most recent directive, the tribunal ordered state authorities and ground water boards to locate stadiums in which the NGT groundwater was misused by ground water stadiums and compute the environmental compensation on the extent that was damaged. The NGT highlighted that the sports organisations need to embrace the use of rain water harvesting, recycles and correct approvals to ensure that cricket stadiums reduce misuse of NGT groundwater. Violation can be subject to punishment, ban or shutdown. The decision supports responsibility and creates precedent to deter the misuse of NGT groundwater by the cricketing stadiums so that water can be used responsibly in the big public arenas.
