Coal Phase-Out: Can India Power Growth Without Coal?

There is currently no specific date for coal phase-out India, however, the growth of coal power has stagnated. A CREA analysis has indicated that coal production underwent zero growth for two years until the first half of 2026, a first in more than 50 years.

What Is The Problem?

Coal is said to produce roughly 75 percent of India’s energy according to ORF, and by March 2026 had about 44 GW of coal capacity in progress. The plan to add an additional 80 GW of capacity by 2032 still stands.

Clean Energy Success

India reached 50% of installed non-fossil capacity by 2025 which was already 5 years ahead of schedule and 52.57% by February 2026. By July 2026, solar energy was at 164.59 GW while wind generation stood at 58.14 GW. The government wants to achieve 500 GW in non-fossil capacity by 2030.

Can Non-Fossil Energy Replace Growth? – coal phase-out India

According to CREA, achieving the target of 500 GW means that coal production now can’t grow before 2030. The new addition of over 8.5 GW in coal plants is happening at times when coal plants are being operated less as green energy is filling all of the new capacity.
