Nine Crucial Species May Help India Achieve Biodiversity and Climate Targets

Extreme weather is not the planet’s only warning sign. New research has found that India could hit two of its biggest environmental promises at once by protecting just nine anchor species. It is being called one of the most practical shortcuts to India’s biodiversity and climate targets proposed by scientists in years.
What is an anchor species concept?
Researchers studied 160 legally protected and threatened animals in India. They found that protecting the habitat of any one of nine “anchor species”—the sambar deer, leopard, dhole, tiger, king cobra, gaur, Indian pangolin, sloth bear and great hornbill—would protect more than a third of the country’s above-ground forest carbon and more than 700 other vertebrate species that share the same landscapes.
The logic is simple. These animals need big, connected forests to survive. Protect their home range and you get to protect hundreds of lesser-known, less famous species that live in the same forest, along with the carbon stored in those trees.
Why this matters for India’s climate pledge
As a part of the global Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, India has committed to conserve 30 percent of its terrestrial and aquatic resources by 2030. Today, protected areas account for only about five percent of the country. That is a big gap to fill in less than four years, particularly with farmland, mining and infrastructure competing for the same land.
The anchor species approach provides a shortcut. India already has strong legal instruments in place, such as the Wildlife Protection Act and programs such as Project Tiger and Project Elephant, which have been getting steady government funding, accounting for almost a tenth of the environmental budget in recent years. The great hornbill, for example, or the pangolin, could be made to magnify conservation gains many times over using the same funding and legal model—without new laws.
Where the Approach Fails
The method is not foolproof. This is good for animals that live in large patches of forest and tends to ignore species with very specific or non-forest habitats, like the critically endangered great Indian bustard, which lives in grasslands, not forests.
