Cotton Farming Under Climate Stress in India

According to the data India holds the prominent title of the second-biggest cotton producer in the world being responsible for about 20 percent of cotton farming in the world. However, the yields of cotton still remain low at about 440 kilograms of lint per hectare.

What Impedes Cotton Development?

Notably, about 62 percent of cotton land depends on rainwater, which influences not only flowering processes but also leads to decreased cotton formation. It was stated in the report regarding the monsoon season that the pink cotton worm managed to gain resistance to the genetically-modified cotton.

What Statistics Indicate?

The volume of cotton production has decreased from 352.48 lakh bales in 2020–21 to 290.91 lakh bales in 2025–26, which will become lower than the cotton farming consumption rate of 328 lakh bales. Research conducted by the university in Haryana revealed that farmers lose on average 15,143 rupees per acre.

What Can Support Cotton Growing?

The Mission for Cotton Productivity aims to increase rice productivity to 755 kilograms per hectare within a period of five years. Experts propose using drip irrigation technical methods with the help of which it will be possible to minimize the usage of pesticides as well as save water, approximately 32 lakh farmers being dependent on the crop cultivated.
