Eco-Anxiety: How Climate Change Affects Mental Health

For numerous people, concern about global warming is an everyday burden. One survey by Lancet Planetary Health involving 10,000 young individuals in ten countries has indicated that almost 60% of those surveyed experienced high or extreme concern.

What Is Eco-Anxiety?

Eco-anxiety is a general term that is used to describe discomfort, anxiety, or even depression that is caused by worries about environmental issues. Note that it is not necessarily a mental disorder.

What Did the Survey Show?

  • Concern: Around 60% of people had strong or extremely strong worries and around 85% of respondents had moderate worries about environmental issues.
  • Everyday life: 45% of participants reported that these worries hinder their everyday life.
  • Future: 75% of surveyed people think that the future looks alarming.
  • Government: About 65% of respondents believe that governments do not do enough for youth.
  • Where this concern is most evident: In the Philippines almost all respondents express their worries, while in India and Brazil, they have expressed their concerns.

What Is the Significance of Governments?

Anxiety was more acute among individuals who believed their government was doing little or nothing to change the situation. According to researchers, feelings of eco-anxiety relate to governmental failure rather than to environmental damage in itself.

What Can Help?

Experts propose collective action and community engagement as ways of coping with eco-anxiety. If anxiety becomes overwhelming and interferes with your life, consult a mental health expert or a trusted person.
