An adult elephant can weigh over five tonnes. That size of body generates an enormous amount of internal heat just from moving, digesting and being. They have few sweat glands, tucked in near their toenails, which don’t do much on a hot afternoon.

Why Elephant Species Have Different Ear Sizes

African elephants live in hotter, more open habitats. So they’ve evolved much larger, rounder ears to dissipate maximum heat.
