India’s Sinking River Deltas: The Hidden Cost of Groundwater Extraction

A Nature research released in January 2026 examined satellite data from the years 2014 to 2023 for 40 deltas and disclosed that the important deltas of India are sinking, India sinking river deltas groundwater, including more than 90 percent of the Ganges-Brahmaputra deltas, Brahmani, and Mahanadi.

What Rate of Sinking are They Experiencing?

A big part of Brahmani and Mahandi deltas are sinking faster at a speed of more than 5 mm a year. The world’s sea levels are rising approximately at a speed of 4 mm a year; thus, deterioration of lands can occur faster than the sea.

What are the Causes?

  • Water: Over extraction of water has been indicated as the leading cause in Ganges-Brahmaputra and Cauvery deltas.
  • Urban Areas: Urbanization has been singled out as the major contributing factor when speaking about the Brahmani delta.
  • Lack of Silt: Lessening of sediment flow is responsible for Mahanadi and Kabani’s deterioration.

Why is it Important? – India sinking river deltas groundwater

Sinking of land increases the flood risks without excessive sea level rise. Scientists call Indian deltas unprepared divers due to high levels of relative sea level rise and limited possibilities of adaptation. It is necessary to regulate extraction of underground waters and carry out adaptation to sea level.
