UK not fully prepared for impacts of climate change

The UK is not completely prepared to tackle the increasing impacts of climate change, according to the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). On February 3, it published a set of recommendations on preparedness, resilience, adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The UK needs to put more efforts to adequately address current and future impacts of climate change. NFCC has called on authorities to take urgent action to help protect communities, infrastructure and the economy as natural disasters intensify.

UK fire and rescue entities already play a crucial role in responding to climate change-related emergencies. But responding to these disasters requires significant resources. This results in a challenge in being able to maintain their ‘business as usual’ response.

Limited resources and a lack of forecasting mechanisms are posing challenges for the sector. NFCC’s set of recommendations comes as 2025 has already seen a number of extreme disasters, including serious flooding in the UK and deadly fires in California.
