The UAE had a notable presence at the recently concluded COP29 Summit in Baku. The climate conference had climate finance in prime focus, seeking a finance deal better than the current $100 billion annually – agreed in 2009.
The Gulf state hosted the COP28 Summit at Expo City Dubai later in 2023, convening thousands of people from across the globe. The conference noted an early success as participants agreed to operationalise the landmark Loss and Damage Fund.
UAE and Senegal to co-host UN 2026 Water Conference
During the COP29 Summit, and in preparation for the UN 2026 Water Conference, the UAE delegation participated in meticulous discussions that highlighted the country’s commitment to advancing water issues on the international agenda.
The UAE Foreign Ministry’s activities included holding a session to early analyse the UN 2026 conference. During the session, the GCC nation presented the vision for the conference and held comprehensive talks on pressing global priorities.
Co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, the session gathered together prominent actors from across sectors and stakeholder groups, including senior representatives from the government of Brazil, the COP29 Presidency, and the University College of London.
UAE’s notable presence at COP29 climate conference
The UN 2026 Water Conference is going to be co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, and held in the Gulf state from December 2-6, 2026. It is aimed at supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6.
During the COP29 Summit in Baku, the UAE participated in different events to highlight its prioritisation of climate issues, building on the success of COP28 Summit. The UAE presented key initiatives such as the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative (MBZWI).
