UAE President stresses need for climate resilience at COP29 Summit in Baku
UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed is in Baku for the annual UN climate conference. He attended the opening session of the COP29 Global Leaders Climate Action Summit on Tuesday and stressed the importance of ensuring of climate-resilient future for all.
The Summit is being touted as the ‘Finance COP’. Global leaders are participating in the conference to find solutions to one of the most pressing challenges faced by humans this century: Climate Change. They are looking to finalise a annual climate financing target.
Continued international collaboration on climate action
The present $100 billion per year climate finance target set in 2009 has been criticised by many experts as not sufficient. On the occasion of his participation in the Summit, the UAE President noted his country’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development.
He highlighted that this dedication led to the UAE’s hosting of the COP29 Summit at Expo City Dubai in 2023. The conference lured international cooperation to assess different countries’ progress on the 2015 Paris agreement goals.
His Highness emphasised the need for continued constructive international collaboration on climate action. He framed climate action as an opportunity for progress, rather than a burden, stressing the importance of ensuring a fair and rational energy transition.
UAE’s commitment to co-creating a climate-resilient future
The UAE President called on all parties to prioritise mutual understanding over division, stressing that the collective mission today is to collaborate for the greater good of humanity. The UAE delegation accompanying His Highness also participated in the session.
On the sidelines of the COP29 Summit in Baku, Mohamed bin Zayed also held separate meetings including other delegation leaders. The discussions covered clean energy, sustainability, climate action, and regional and international issues.
