UAE leaders honour COP28 negotiators’ efforts in achieving historic climate progress
UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and Prime Minister HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid received COP28 negotiators, representatives of the COP28 Presidency Office and conference organisers on February 28 and honoured their efforts in bringing climate progress.
Taking to X (previously called Twitter), the President appreciated the group’s efforts, expertise and hard work in making the climate conference a success, bringing out the historic “UAE Agreement” and presenting a positive image of the country and its people to the world.
The Gulf state is prominent for its commitment to climate action and building partnerships for the betterment of the planet and the benefit of future generations. Earlier this month, it announced the continuation of the “Year of Sustainability” in 2024.
UAE announces extension of ‘Year of Sustainability’
His Highness made the announcement on the social media platform to mark the country’s National Environment Day. Throughout 2023, the Year of Sustainability helped raising awareness about sustainability values, encouraging behaviour changes.
This year, the theme continues to invite everyone who calls the Emirates home to join in the collective effort to adopt sustainable practices through a string of community-driven initiatives and activities themed around sustainability, reported the Emirates News Agency.
On February 13, COP28 launched a partnership with the hosts of future COP29 and COP30 summits, Baku and Belem, to improve cooperation and continuity between current and future COP Presidencies, leading to increased climate action in support of ‘Mission 1.5C’.
COP Presidencies Troika improving global cooperation
The 2015 Paris agreement seeks to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. But human activity-led climate change has already eliminated temperatures across the globe. 2023 has already been confirmed as the hottest year on record.
The partnership, called The COP Presidencies Troika, represents the first time that a current COP Presidency has been formally mandated to unite with two future presidencies to improve international cooperation to stimulate ambition in terms of climate action.
Participants at the recently concluded COP28 Summit in Dubai agreed to operationalise the Loss and Damage Fund to compensate vulnerable countries for the consequences of climate change. Furthermore, they acknowledged the need to transition away from fossil fuels.
