UAE-BRICS membership to usher in better chapters on climate change and sustainable development

The UAE Minister of Climate Change and the Environment took on a prominent role at the BRICS High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change in Russia last month. The event comprised a couple of important sessions, including:

1. National Efforts to Combat Climate Change and Promote Sustainable Development

2. Cooperation of the BRICS Countries on Climate Change and Sustainable Development

In the beginning of the year, the UAE leadership decided to extend its Year of Sustainability continuing since last year. The decision significantly underscores the Gulf state’s focus on building a sustainable future for all.

During the BRICS event in Russia, the minister confirmed that the UAE has invested a staggering $50 billion in clean energy projects across more than 70 countries and plans to invest an additional $50 billion over the next decade, according to media reports.

She emphasised the UAE’s commitment to bolstering international collaboration, especially among members of the expanding BRICS bloc, in developing urgent solutions to address climate change. She also noted the value of cooperation in carbon markets.

In the second session of the BRICS event, the Emirati minister stressed that strengthening efforts to confront the brutal climate crisis is an urgent priority. The lack of such cooperation is likely to undermine global efforts to address hunger, poverty and ill health.
