UAE and Ghana announce $30 million partnership for biodiversity, climate goals

The UAE and Ghana have announced a $30 million partnership for nature-based community development and climate solutions. The frameork document sets out six investment areas that deliver climate, biodiversity and community development benefits.

The partnership has a focus on biodiversity corridors, reforestation, agroecology and several other sectors. It is a testament to the UAE’s notable commitment to protecting global biodiversity and climate to ensure a brighter future for all.

UAE-Ghana partnership for climate, community engagement

The UAE-Ghana partnership underscores the Gulf state’s commitment to the UAE Consensus that calls for the ending and reversal of deforestation by the end of the decade and highlights the importance of the protection and preservation of biodiversity.

The UAE’s investment in Ghana is going to bolster the country’s afforestation efforts and also create a broader positive impact on local communities. By backing a comprehensive set of initiatives, the Gulf state seeks to support local livelihoods and community engagement.

Samuel Jinapor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources of Ghana, said: “Even though Ghana is receiving carbon payments, there exist critical implementation gaps that need to be filled ith other financial instruments to generate more emission reductions.”

Expressing gratefulness to the UAE government for facilitating the latest partnership, the Minister tried to assure that the resources are going to be used to generate the best value for forests, climate and people in the direction of a 1.5 degrees Celsius planet.

Eyes on COP29 Summit in Baku in November

Participants at the COP28 Summit in Dubai last year signed the UAE Consensus to adopt a goal to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030. The UAE and partners mobilised over $2 billion of finance for nature-climate projects and programmes.

Both the UAE and Ghana are also members of a public-private investment coordination mechanism called the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership. The countries are going to detail some of the initial projects under their bilateral partnership at COP29 in Baku this year.
