Top court rules on Greta Thunberg’s legal suit on climate action

The Supreme Court of Sweden has ruled that climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and hundreds of other people cannot proceed in relation to a class action suit that had sought to force the state to take stronger action against climate change.
Back in 2022, scores of campaigners decided to file a legal action stressing that the state is not doing enough to limit the climate crisis or mitigate its effects. The group of 300 plaintiffs in this case seek the country to do more to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Nonetheless, the top court did not rule out that a climate suit formulated differently could be heard as the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has said groups meeting certain requirements can sue for climate change.
The largely anthropogenic climate crisis has become a bigger issue than before. More action needs to be taken against it as carbon emissions push global temperatures into uncharted territories and trigger natural disasters of serious intensities.
