The 2024 YR4 asteroid – measuring approximately 40 to 100 metres – is expected to pass very closely to planet Earth in December 2032. Scientists believe that it has some 2 percent chance of hitting the Earth in 7 years, raising alarms among space agencies across the globe.
Because of its size, speed and possibility of hitting our planet, many people online are calling it a ‘city destroyer’. The YR4 is not comparable to the size of the asteroid that slammed into Earth 66 million years ago. But it is capable of causing regional destruction.
The 2024 YR4 asteroid could hit our planet at around 2:02 pm GMT on December 22, 2032. But the precise time is prone to change. Countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Colombia, Nigeria, Ecuador and Venezuela are likely in the path of impact.
These predictions are most likely to change as space agency continue to gather more information. The asteroid is made of rocky substances and, therefore, is likely to end up broken into smaller pieces as it enters the earth’s atmosphere.
