Pope Leo XIV Aligns Church with Amazonian Environmental Causes

Pope Leo XIV is expected to be a significant advocate of the environmental protection and the protection of Amazon rainforest.

As Pope Leo XIV has stepped into his new role, his actions and proactive initiatives will be closely observed by the global community. Especially the actions towards the environmental issues. For several reasons, Pope’s legacy to take care of the environment is keenly watched which includes the moral authority, global influence, and profound support for the Indigenous and vulnerable communities. 

Pope Leo XIV who was formerly Bishop Robert Prevost of Chiclayo in Peru took deep care and concerns over the environment, also he had deep connections with the indigenous communities who were in Peru. This signifies his commitment to raise his voice and support for any injustice against the Amazon Rainforest and ecology. With his legacy of ‘Laudato Si’, Pope Leo XIV is expected to reinforce the moral responsibility of protecting the Earth. 

“He (Pope Leo XIV) was always very welcoming, very close to the people. He had no problem saying yes when we proposed it. He was genuinely interested in social pastoral work.” said Laura Vargas, Secretary of the Interreligious Council of Peru.

Pope Leo XIV has previously worked together with organizations like AIDESEP, the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative and others, which shows his dedication to sustainable development. Amazonian Catholics witnessing him as the voice of continuity and strength, that transforms the Church as a more active force to save this planet.
