Nigeria: Edo State Launches €175 million Climate Resilience Project

With the aim of mitigating the rising global challenge of climate change, Edo State of Nigeria has planned to launch a significant project.

The notable environmental initiative of Edo State, Nigeria has attracted global attention, when they officially launched the €175 million worth Climate Resilience Project ‘Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project’ and it is funded by the EIB (European Investment Bank). This was previously rolled out on 22 May 2025, by the State Coordinator of the project and CEO of Edo Flood, Erosion and Watershed Management Agency, Ahmed Momoh at the inaugural steering and technical meeting held at Benin City. 

Key Objectives: ‘Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project’

  • Implement gully erosion control and slope stabilization measures. 
  • Promote integrated watershed management practices. 
  • Enhance livelihoods in targeted communities through sustainable environmental practices. 
  • Build capacity for planning, managing, and monitoring erosion-related activities and disaster risk management. 

“Edo State Government has already released N500 million in counterpart funding. Preparedness is key. Without timely disbursement of counterpart funding and proper logistics in place we risk missing critical targets” said Ahmed Momoh. 

This proactive approach towards the global concern highlights the unparalleled commitment to sustainable environmental management and the well-being of the communities. 

“This project must yield the outcomes that fully justify the investment. Our objective is to position Edo state as a benchmark for climate adaptation across Nigeria” he added.
