Meteorological forecasters and politicians in the UK are facing major criticism after hundreds of homes and businesses across the country suffered strong flooding in Storm Bert. The Met Office insists that it issued sufficient alerts.
There are complaints that the meteorological department did not issue an amber or red alert, and that not enough defences had been put in place. But a spokesperson for the Met Office noted that the storm had been forecast sufficiently before it hit the country.
Nearly 350,000 homes in England lost electricity during the storm, though most have since been reconnected. Natural disasters such as Storm Bert have become more frequent in recent years as the brutal climate crisis gains more ground.
The recently concluded COP29 Summit in Baku shed light on the need for more climate finance. It appears participants agreed on a $300 billion per year pledge, but many climate campaigners insist that the figure is much less than required to fight climate change.
