Sport England chair Chris Boardman urges Premier League clubs to step up climate action
Chairman of Sport England has urged the sport and physical activity sector, particularly the Premier League football clubs, to take advantage of its popularity for promoting the fundamental shift required to tackle the climate crisis.
In a keynote speech at the global Sport Positive summit, Boardman recognised the sporting organisations across the country who are leading the way in turning the way in becoming more green. He stated that some of them he had seen first hand during his Pedal for Paris campaign during summer.
But he also went on to say the importance that sport has and can be utilised as an awareness medium. Chris’s Tuesday speech to outline how the sector is being helped to take meaningful action with the support of partners through investment. Financial support have been given by Sport England for people to take part in nature and wildlife conservation, restore flooded story pitches and help sport clubs become sustainable.
He noted that sports contribution to carbon footprint generation is massive and same is for waste generation. The system needs rewiring like incentives given for the right deeds. Government is also stepping up and trying to go to the next level in terms of climate adaptability and managing the climate crisis.
