Record-Breaking September Heat Makes 2023 The Hottest Year, says C3S

September saw much of the world grappling with unprecedented heat, contributing to a year on track to be the hottest in recorded human history.

This sweltering trend followed the Northern Hemisphere’s warmest-ever summer, setting off alarm bells among climate experts.

Unprecedented Heatwave in Sept 2023

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), September witnessed an average surface air temperature of 16.38 degrees Celsius (61.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

This temperature was 0.93 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the month, surpassing the previous 2020 record by 0.5 degrees Celsius. Typically, temperature records are broken by much smaller margins, closer to one-tenth of a degree.

September’s Shocking 1.75°C Increase

What is truly concerning is that September marked the most significant temperature anomalies of any year dating back to 1940.

The month, overall, was a staggering 1.75 degrees Celsius warmer than the preindustrial reference period. This rapid warming is directly linked to the ongoing climate crisis, primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels.

Oceans Heating Up

One critical factor exacerbating this extreme heat is the rising temperature of our oceans.

Warmer oceans have a reduced capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, further intensifying the vicious cycle of global warming. This warming trend also disrupts fragile ecosystems and threatens biodiversity.

World Leaders Will Discuss Climate Change in COP28 (starting November 30)

With the repercussions of global warming becoming increasingly evident, world leaders are set to convene in Dubai for the United Nations COP28 climate talks starting November 30.

These talks will be crucial for forging a consensus on vital issues such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, securing financing for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, and promoting renewable energy sources.

However, achieving agreement on these matters is challenging, as differing viewpoints persist among participating nations.

While there’s consensus that past climate action has fallen short, finding a unified path forward still needs to be discovered.

Pope Francis Calls for Immediate Climate Action

Pope Francis has joined the chorus of voices urging more urgent and concrete action on climate change. He emphasized the need for world leaders to address polluting emissions promptly, highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis, which affects everyone.

Pope Francis also expressed solidarity with those experiencing the adverse effects of climate change and commended those working to alleviate their suffering.

The Pope’s message aligns with his previous warnings about the world’s precarious state due to global warming.

He has called on COP28 participants to commit to binding policies for phasing out fossil fuels, recognizing the critical role of immediate and concerted action in safeguarding our planet.
