Perfect Rat Storm: Climate change causing rat numbers in cities to soar
Rat numbers are increasing in cities as the climate crisis deepens and global temperatures rise, according to recent research. San Francisco, Toronto and 14 other cities across the globe are recording a significant increase in these rodents.
The research did not include London, Paris and some other big cities as they did not offer the necessary data. But the researchers said there is no reason to expect the results to be different in the cities not included in the study.
In the past 10 years, rat numbers increased by 390% in the US Capital, 300% in San Francisco and 186% in Toronto. One of the biggest cities in Canada is struggling to handle a “perfect rat storm”. Toronto city’s helpline is fielding scores of rat-related calls.
