Paris Climate Agreement at Risk? Trump’s Possible Plans to Exit

According to the New York Times on Friday, the transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump has created proclamations and executive orders on withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement and reducing the scale of some national monuments to make room for additional mining and drilling.

According to the source, Trump is also anticipated to withdraw a waiver that permits California and other states to have stronger pollution regulations and to push the halt on approving new liquefied natural gas exports to major markets in Asia and Europe.

Early in his first term, 78-year-old Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement, claiming it was useless since it aims to force the US and other developed nations to a higher standard while allowing nations to voluntarily limit their own pollution.

Trump pledged to implement many of the measures laid out in the report throughout his campaign. In response to a request from Reuters, Karoline Leavitt, who is a spokeswoman for the Trump transition team stated that the election results on Tuesday gave him a, “mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. He’ll deliver.”

In January, the Joe Biden administration put a hold on approving new LNG exports while it finished a review on the shipment’s impacts on the economy and environment. According to a department official, the US Energy Department will provide an updated draft study for public review for 60 days before the year ends.

Trump is also anticipated to end the Harris-Biden administration’s permit stop on new natural gas export facilities and a waiver that permits states including California to impose stricter pollution regulations than the federal government after he assumes office.

During his campaign, Trump promised to unleash America’s energy sector and implement “Drill, baby, drill” policies, which would cut energy and electricity costs by 50% during his first year in office.

According to the article, which cited unnamed individuals with knowledge of the conversations with some members of the transition team, says that they are considering relocating the Environmental Protection Agency’s headquarters from Washington.
