Nestlé continues to push the boundaries of sustainable packaging

Nestle continues to push ahead the boundaries of sustainable packaging with innovative paper based solutions across major brands. The company is hell bent on reducing plastic usage in its packaging and thus has brought changes in the process leading to reduction in the plastic usage by 90 percent. 

New Look of Vital Proteins Brand

Nestle’s latest move involves the launch of paperboard canisters for vital proteins brand in the US, that reduce plastic use by 90 percent compared to the previous packaging. Developed in collaboration with the Research & Development wing located at Bridgewater, New Jersey. These canisters feature a proprietary coverlid that is both leak proof and durable, making it ideal for everyday use.

Coffee Packaging Advancements

It is also revolutionising its coffee packaging. In the UK, Nestle has introduced a high barrier paper refill pack for its coffee brand Nescafe, allowing consumers to refill their glass jars while reducing packaging weight by 97 percent. The paper is recyclable in local paper waste streams, aligning with Nestle’s sustainable goals. Addressing the environmental efforts, the Nescafe Cappuccino range in Europe now comes in a fully recyclable paper body can. 

Nestle’s Commitment towards Sustainability

The company has taken various initiatives in order to align and maintain the oath of sustainability leveraging its extensive R&D network to innovate sustainable packaging solutions. 

“Coffee is particularly sensitive to oxygen and humidity”, says Alex Touzet, head of the Coffee Business unit of Nestle. “Redesigning packaging for this category requires additional efforts to ensure product freshness, and quality with science  based and sustainability solutions.” 

It aims to recycle plastic packaging up to 95 percent by 2025 and these efforts will help to do it.
