Nationally Determined Contributions: Most countries likely to miss deadline as COP30 summit nears

Under the 2015 Paris agreement, countries are required to submit detailed plans – called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – once in 5 years, highlighting their targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner planet.

These are then discussed at the COP summits happening on an annual basis. The upcoming COP30 Summit is set to be hosted by Brazil. Most countries are likely to miss a looming deadline to file the vital plans.

Many people are urging the biggest polluters to act as soon as possible. The situation calls for urgency as climate change threatens natural disasters of unprecedented intensities. The international community should put efforts into cutting emissions by about 50% this decade.
