Lion Becomes IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Says IUCN Congress

The International Union for Conservation of Nature is a global organisation that monitors natural activity, and takes initiatives to preserve nature & its natural species from the environmental suffering caused by humans. They are well-acclaimed for producing and maintaining the IUCN Red List. This list helps to assess the species and their status in the ecology and majorly it highlights the importance of swift actions for enhancing the well-being of the particular species.
On 1 April 2025, they revealed data from the Red List of Lions which is at the state of highly depleted animals in the world particularly in the regions including North Africa and SouthWest Asia it has reached the state of extinction. IUCN has clearly decoded the reason behind the diminution of Lion significantly for the past few years and its occupancy is estimated at only 6%.

As per the Red List data given by IUCN in 2023 states that, the population of lions in the following regions ensures their growing predicament in the environment.
- Africa – 23,000 (adult & subadult)
- India – 670 (adult & subadult)
- Global Population – 20,000
“In India, the Asiatic Lion population shows positive trend, leading to its reclassification from Endangered to Vulnerable” – IUCN
Though there are some glad tidings sprouting from a few places, IUCN continue their monitoring and close research to emphasise the importance of protecting these iconic species from the multifaceted threads created by humans by working together with the governments of respective regions.
