Just Stop Oil protesters spray-paint Stonehenge monument and private jets orange

Just Stop Oil is one of many environmental groups across Europe that have been receiving a great deal of attention – and criticism – for disrupting sporting events, interrupting traffic and splashing paint and food on art pieces to lure attention to climate change.

Climate protesters from the group sprayed orange paint on the ancient Stonehenge monument in Southern England on June 19, eventually taken into custody after a couple of bystanders appeared to intervene and stop them. The incident has been making headlines globally.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak quickly condemned the act as a “disgraceful act of vandalism”. Labour leader Keir Starmer, his main opponent in the election next month, described the group as “pathetic” and the damage as “outrageous”.

Just Stop Oil said it acted in response to Labour’s recent election manifesto. The political group has highlighted that if it grabs victory on July 4, it is ready to not issue further licences for oil and gas exploration. Just Stop Oil backs the moratorium but stresses it is not enough.

Just Stop Oil protesters spray private jets orange

Just a day after the infamous incident involving the Stonehenge monument, a couple of climate activists from the same Just Stop Oil group got arrested after cutting through a fence at London Stansted Airport and spray-painting private jets orange.

Police arrested a couple of female climate activists in a private area of the airport on suspicion of criminal damage and interference with the use or operation of national infrastructure. The airfield is the city’s third busiest airport and is often used by government officials.

Just Stop Oil even highlighted that the airfield was where prominent global pop star Taylor Swift’s private jet was parked. But Essex police confirmed that the singer’s aircraft was not at the airport. Swift is doing three shows in London from Friday through Sunday.

The environmental group posted a video on social media of someone cutting through a security fence at the airport and a clip of a protester using a fire extinguisher to spray orange paint on at least a couple of private jets there. Did they do the right thing?
