India & E-Waste: Tension Arises Among Global Tech Firms due to High Cleanup Costs

The e-waste has become an alarming concern after the report of Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 stating India as the third largest producer of e-waste after the two powerful and dominating countries such as China and U.S. Due to the rapid growth of electronics & short product life cycles the volume of e-waste has been multiplying in India. And the e-waste is estimated as 3.2 million metric tonnes in which only 43% are recycled formally. This showcases the lacking environmental security for a pivotal activity like e-waste recycling.

Also, the recent buzz is about the discontent expressed by the global tech companies like Daikin, Samsung and Hitachi who have their manufacturing industries in India. The revised cost over the e-waste recycling imposed by the Indian government has been raised which backfired the companies as a result. So, they urge the government to abandon such an approach.

Amidst this discontentment of international companies, the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) of India is tasked to audit for compliance and impose penalties over the violators under the vision of environmental protection efforts.
