High Seas Treaty: A Race Against Time to Protect Our Oceans

The High Seas Treaty or the Treaty on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction has become the instrument that is going to soon play an important role in the protection of our oceans. But this depends with the ratification of the agreement by the member countries. The treaty, in order to come into force and become legally binding over the international subjects in 2025, must be signed and ratified by at least 60 nations.

More countries have pledged to speed up the protection of marine life by signing the High Seas Treaty. The treaty is open for signatures since September 20, 2023, and the European Union and the State of Palestine have already signed it.

This country will be in a central position to help create a sound legal regime for the protection and utilization of marine biological diversity beyond the national jurisdiction. It will assist in preserving sensitive coastlines, reducing global warming impacts and providing healthy seas to future generations.
