Heavy Snow, Rain and Flooding Disrupt Travel Across Britain
As severe weather hampered road and rail traffic and led airports in northern England to briefly close their runways delaying dozens of flights on Monday and also Britain is preparing for further snow, rain and flooding.
While the Environment Agency stated that flooding was anticipated at more than 150 areas owing to rain and snow melting, the Met Office issued warnings for snow, ice and rain in a large portion of the United Kingdom.
Britain’s National Rail said that dozens of trains have been cancelled or delayed due to flooding or severe weather. According to National Highways, snow or water has forced the closure of several important highways in northern and central England.
Due to heavy snow, Manchester Airport temporarily closed its runways early on Monday. Liverpool Airport had done the same on Sunday. “Some departures and arrivals may still experience delays,” Manchester Airport said once the runways were reopened.
According to the Met Office, temperatures in certain parts of Scotland dropped as low as minus 13.3 degrees Celsius (8.1 Fahrenheit) making it the coldest night of the winter so far in the UK.
