Heavy rains and travel disruptions expected as Cyclone Fengal approaches

Named by Saudi Arabia, Cyclone Fengal is fast approaching the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline. It is expected to make landfall on November 30 in the morning. Heavy precipitation is expected in Puducherry and Karaikal over the next couple of days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts indicate that the cyclone is going to approach Tamil Nadu, skirting the Sri Lankan coast, before losing its intensity upon making landfall. The cyclone started as a deep depression and is intensifying.

Cyclone Fengal: Schools closed, airlines issue alerts

Heavy rainfall has already been causing disruptions along Tamil Nadu’s coastline, especially to coastal occupations, fishing and damaging standing paddy crops for farmers. Schools and educational institutions are closed in different districts across the state.

Schools in Chennai and Kanchipuram remain open due to relatively normal rainfall conditions. Indigo has issued alerts of possible delays and cancellations for flights to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai, Salem and Tiruchirapalli.
