Greta Thunberg forcibly removed from Swedish parliament entrance over climate protest
Swedish police recently removed prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg and other campaigners after they blocked the entrance to the Swedish parliament for a second day. Officers lifted the 21-year-old and dragged her away before putting her down on the ground.
Thunberg and other activists started blocking the main entrances to the parliament on Monday in a sit-down demonstration against the unprecedented effects of climate change and ‘political inaction’. Then left in the afternoon that day but returned on Tuesday morning.
“Autistic climate justice activist born at 375 ppm”
Thunberg became the face of youth climate activism as her regular protests – started in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018 – quickly turned into a global movement involving large rallies across continents. She has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since 2019.
The campaigner is famous for her speeches in her teenage years. She describes herself on X as an “autistic climate justice activist born at 375 ppm”. In 2023, she was detained by police or removed from protests in multiple countries including Sweden, Norway and Germany.
Last month, Thunberg got cleared of a public order offence over a demonstration outside an oil and gas conference in 2023, after a judge in London ruled that she had no case to answer. Outside court after the proceedings, she stressed the need to “remember who the real enemy is”.
Climate change – one of greatest threats to humanity
Greta Thunberg calls her autism diagnosis a ‘superpower’. She held the first ‘School Strike for Climate’ at the age of 15 outside the parliament in Sweden and scores of youngsters globally became a part of her prominent Fridays For Future strikes.
In 2019, she took a year out of school to focus on environmental activism and in 2022, she delivered The Climate Book. Her demonstrations highlight the pressing need for action as climate change becomes one of the greatest threats to humanity.
