Global Climate Change Impact: One in Five People Felt Strong Effects Daily from December 2024 to February 2025

A recent report released by Climate Central reveals the extent and serious nature of a human induced climate crisis and its impact on global temperatures from December 2024 until February 2025. As a result of the ongoing burning of coal, oil and methane gas, climate change intensified extreme heat, exposing billions of people to life threatening temperatures.

According to the Climate Shift Index (CSI), the report says that during the corresponding period, at least one in every five people worldwide experienced the influence of climate change on daily temperatures. About 394 million people were subjected to over thirty days of hazardous heat, in which 74% of individuals experiencing hazardous heat days resided in Africa. Note that dangerous heat days are considered to have temperatures above the local 90th percentile, which are based on records from 1991 to 2020.

The report goes on to indicate that in half of the 220 countries reviewed, the average person faced climate change influenced temperatures for at least 30 days. This average applies to 287 distinct cities across the globe. Kristina Dahl, VP of Science at Climate Central stated, Climate change is no longer an abstract threat but rather a current reality affecting millions of people around the world and the effects will worsen as emissions from fossil fuels continue in the future.
