Germany boosts solar installations amid Russia-Ukraine conflict and climate crisis
Solar power installation in Germany, the largest economy in Europe, rose by 35% year-on-year in the first four months of this year, substantially improved by a rise in industrial, commercial and ground-mounted photovoltaic demand, according to the German Solar Industry Association.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the sudden drop in Russian fossil fuel exports to Germany, Berlin has been focusing on solar energy, part of a plan to cover 80% of energy needs from clean energy by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2045.

Germany expects sizeable increase in solar installations
Citing a May survey by YouGov, the Solar Industry Association BSW noted that new solar power capacity increased by more than 5 GW in the first third of 2024 as 56% of businesses and over 60% of real estate owners in Germany seek to invest in solar power systems.
In the first four months of 2024, Germany noted that newly installed photovoltaics capacity on commercial rooftops increased by 81% and solar installations on open spaces by 74%, compared to the same period last year.
The association said that it expects a double-digit percentage increase in installations and solar storage capacity this year, meeting the government objectives of 19 GW of new annual capacity to reach 215 GW, or 25% of its domestic electricity consumption, by the end of the decade.

Munich hosting The Smarter E Europe from June 19 to 21
Carsten Körnig, Managing Director of the BSW, said: “Solar and storage technology is increasingly becoming the standard,” highlighting that commercial roofs and low-yield open spaces are being electrified using solar energy after a boom in residential areas.
From June 19 to 21, Munich is hosting The Smarter E Europe, the continent’s largest trade fair alliance for the energy industry. It is expected to lure more than 115,000 trade visitors. Keep an eye out on Eco Discussion as we deliver more updates on solar power boom.
