Food companies in UAE using modern technology to reduce food refuse this Ramadan 2025

From using artificial intelligence to reduce food refuse to collecting surplus meals, scores of brands in the hospitality industry across the UAE are putting in considerable effort to ensure that this holy month of Ramadan is a sustainable one.

Deliveroo and the UAE Food Bank have launched a bank to collect surplus food and redistribute it to communities in need. The company has more than 13,000 partners in the country. It has been receiving a good response since announcing the campaign.

Ramadan in UAE: Collecting surplus food to redistribute

In 2025, the UAE Food Bank has formed a number of partnerships to reduce food refuse in the country. Last year, its efforts helped in diverting 5,466 tonnes of food from landfills and the bank seeks to reduce food refuse by 30% by 2027.

Taghrid Oraibi, head of communications at Deliveroo Middle East, highlighted that restaurants in the UAE had clear guidelines from the Food Bank on the approach to take to package surplus food and ensure that it is safe for consumption.

The UAE started celebrating the holy month of Ramadan on March 1. The Moon Sighting Committee helped in reaching the exact date for the period. Ramadan is a month for fasting, peace, compassion and charitable acts.

Modern technology, curated set menus and composting

Using artificial intelligence, Conrad Dubai is tracking to reduce food refuse this Ramadan 2025. Part of the Hilton Group, this hotel is also locally sourcing their ingredients and this participating in composting campaigns, besides maintaining a hydroponic farm.

Punjab Grill restaurant in Dubai is offering curated set menus instead of buffets this Ramadan to reduce food refuse. The place, nonetheless, is offering slight customisations in portion sizes if requested. Keep an eye out for more details.
