WORKSHOP DETAILS:
One of the main contributors to the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and waste is the current global consumption and production of materials. Since 40% of all jobs depend on ecosystem services and climate change-induced heat stress threatens to reduce productivity by the amount of 80 million full-time jobs, the triple planetary crises have a significant impact on the world of work. In order to address the triple planetary crises and create opportunities for green jobs, a systemic shift to a circular economy is necessary. In a circular economy, materials are used for as long as possible while maintaining their highest value.
The creation and adoption of circular models along all value chains will alter the nature of work and the required skills. With more than 600 million young people living in Asia and the Pacific region, it is predicted that the circular economy will lead to a shift in nearly 80 million jobs.
The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with organizations like Yunus Thailand, the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with the support of the OAK Foundation, are hosting a joint workshop on green skills for the future to raise awareness of the necessary skills for circularity and look for solutions to close the skills gap. The workshop will also support UNEP, ILO, and UNICEF’s Green Jobs for Youth Pact, which aims to increase opportunities for young people to work in the green economy.
The focus of this two-day workshop will be on current initiatives to promote more sustainable production and consumption patterns, as well as how they offer young people the chance to develop skills for the circular economy.
1ST Day will provide information on the opportunities and skill requirements for green jobs as well as current trends in the circular economy, using concrete examples from high-impact industries like plastics.
2nd Day will concentrate on what educational institutions are doing to encourage students to develop green skills and will introduce current initiatives to increase students’ acquisition of green skills. Peer learning will be permitted on Day 2, encouraging students to organize their academic and professional lives in a way that will help them make the transition to a greener economy.
Big Topics Of Workshop:
- How do the current trends towards a circular economy across value chains in high-impact sectors affect youth employment and skill development?
- What skills are necessary for the circular transition?
- How can schools plan skill development to help people get the right skills for green jobs?
- How can we make sure that the skills we are learning now will meet the needs of the future?
- What are the best practice’s or most successful ways to green jobs through education?
